Supplemental Educational Services (SES)/School Choice

Background:

Supplemental educational services (SES) are additional academic instruction designed to increase the academic achievement of students in schools in the second year of program improvement.  School Choice provides families the opportunity to transfer to a non-program improvement school.  Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), offers parents of eligible students attending Title I schools that have not made adequate yearly progress (AYP) opportunities and choices to help ensure that their children achieve.  NCLB provides options for parents:  parents may request to transfer to a non-PI (program improvement) school, or parents may request SES.

Additional information may be obtained regarding the federal regulation pertaining to SES and School Choice by visiting the following websites:

 The Process:

Parents receive a letter via the United States Postal Service notifying them of the PI status of their child’s school.  The letter provides parents with information regarding the STAR test results, whether AYP targets were met, instructional practices implemented at the school to support academic progress, and information as to what parents can to support school improvement, including the options of School Choice & SES.  The letter informs parents of the window for applying for School Choice or SES as well as the date of an informational parent meeting to further discuss the status of the school.

At the informational meeting, parents receive additional information regarding school choice, state approved SES providers, and the process to request choice or services.  Interested families may then complete a request form that evening or by visiting the school site prior to the closing of the initial window.

Completed forms are sent to the District Office, attention coordinator for SES.  Families and providers are then notified of the request for services.  Families may request choice or services after the closing of the initial window or during the additional window which opens after the winter break.
